Often separated into precious and semi-precious categories, the term gemstone

covers a range  of minerals, crystals, rocks and organic materials that are cut and

polished, usually to make jewellery. Though precise definitions vary due to the

range of materials categorised as gemstones, they are usually beautiful and

durable.
